Tribology

Tribology is the technical term for the science of friction, wear and lubrication. Friction matters concern us from childhood onwards. Just think of driving problems on icy streets or a badly lubricated bicycle chain. Where there is friction there is wear. In most cases, wear leads to the end of the life cycle of materials, machines and installations. Up to 90% of all machine and equipment failures are from tribological causes. You can probably remember your last car repair bill.

Using tribologically-optimised systems could save approximately 10 % of current energy usage. Economic consequences – approximately 5 % of the gross domestic product is lost due to friction and wear. Using tribological methods could save Austria 430 million Euros per year.
